"James works with you to build an excellent personalised

nutrition plan and continues to support you throughout to achieve your nutrition goals.

You get a real sense that James cares about your goals.

Before beginning any plan James took the time to understand what I wanted to gain out of a plan and what nutritional background I was coming from. Taking

into account my work patterns and current eating habits and applying James’ knowledge and experience produced an initial plan that was tailor made for me.

This meant that there was no daunting changes to begin with and starting was an

absolute breeze, started off positively and continued to build small successes into large ones."

"Working with JL Nutrition has given me the confidence and self-belief to achieve things I would have not thought possible before. I have increased my fitness levels and enjoy doing

activities that I had stopped doing due to weight gain."

"I would say your knowledge of different exercises, the most optimal ways to train and mixing up my pretty boring program was what made me feel that I could benefit from training. Before our training, I thought people only got a personal trainer to motivate them, I did not lack this so I did not think it was worthwhile. However, the new training and eating routines has definitely improved the way I train and I can definitely feel like I am getting stronger each month."

James Long

Hi, my name is James Long..

And helping you improve your health and composition is my mission!

Let me tell you where my journey started; it was not long after leaving college in the UK, so I was around 18yrs old working with a man who was in his late 40s who was fitter, healthier and stronger than me. At 18 years old I should have been feeling like I was in my prime, instead I was 18stone and sluggish.

From that moment on I decided to take myself on a journey to try and get fitter and stronger. As you can imagine, I spent countless hours trawling the internet searching for a magic pill or a quick fix. I was 18 after all..

Heck it didn't come, no matter how many times it was promised, fad diets here, shake diets there, you name it I probably done it. It was the same with my training routine too, GVT training here because its good for muscle building, The 12 week programme written in muscle and fitness because its gonna get me rock hard abs and 18" guns...

This went on for a few years, until I started getting super serious with my training and wanted to progress further into bodybuilding, during these years I almost succumbed to the thoughts of, "being lean isn't for me", "I can't be lean", "its hard for me to diet", you know the thought patterns right?

But I did make it, I managed to get myself a coach, I was coachable, I asked questions and followed the plan religiously, I got so lean, I competed and I become the person I didn't think I would ever be...

But that came at a cost, a cost of my relationship with food. The restrictive nature that bodybuilding preps can induce really messed with how I saw food and how I acted around it, often eating in secret and then binging because "cheat day" right?

But that is where my love for nutrition grew stronger and this is where I decided to take that step into education and study nutrition. I thought there had to be a better way to get through periods like that.

That is where I studied with Mac Nutrition Uni, quiet easily hands down the best gold standard nutrition course out there, I spent an intense 12 months learning the fundamentals of nutrition and biology with a keen interest in health and sports nutrition.

From there, I then also took the plunge to go back into education when I immigrated to Australia and done a PT course, so I can combine 2 of my favourite things together and help create a better industry by helping people like you make the most out of their health.

Today, I stand before you, not as the fat kid but as a passionate, empathetic, confident health coach that is determined to help you achieve the results you are so desperately wanting to achieve.

Peak condition looks different in all sizes, if I can do it, you can too!

Training supplements

Training

So there is only a handful of training supplements that I would actually really recommend for the average gym person. They are:

Caffeine: Has a half life of around 4-6hours, meaning that if you have a strong coffee that has 120mg of caffeine in, 4-6hours later your body will still have 60mg of that 120mg still circulating around your bloodstream, and then 4-6hrs after that 30mg etc until it all eventually is used. But that is relying on you having just the 1 strong coffee, because again the more you have then that just adds up on top of the already circulating levels of caffeine.

If using caffeine as a pre workout (or an actual pre-workout drink for that matter) then it's recommended to have that 45mins before your session as that's how long it takes to be absorbed and the effects to kick in.

What are the benefits of using caffeine pre training?

  • Reduces reaction time

  • Increases alertness and improves decision making especially when sleep-deprived

  • Increases force/strength output

  • Improves muscular endurance

  • Improves endurance performance

  • Reduces RPE (rates of perceived exertion)

As with everything the poison is within the dose and its recommended that your caffeine supplementation should be around 2-6mg/kg of bodyweight, for some that may feel like a lot, so playing around with the smaller end of the range first and working your way up to a comfortable amount is ideal.

Creatine Monohydrate: Is the most well researched supplement ever and even though there are multiple different versions around, creatine monohydrate should always be your go to choice, not only is it the cheapest but its the most 'proven' of all the versions to work effectively. Don't be scammed by the supplement companies trying to make an extra $$ or 2.

What are the benefits of using creatine:

  • Can increase the training load that can be tolerated, improving recovery and therefore increasing muscle building

  • Improved strength gains

  • Improved recovery

  • Increased muscular endurance

  • Increased glycogen storage

  • Improved cognitive function

Recommended dosage is 5g daily (I recommend taking it even if you DO NOT train in any capacity just for the cognitive benefits).

You may have heard of the loading protocol that sometimes comes with creatine, it's not something that has to be done, it can be taken daily and the creating stores will come full after 21 days or so.

Nutrition

And when it comes to your health there is only a small handful of supplements that you really need to think about taking if you have an otherwise healthy diet. The supplement industry is a multi-billion $$ industry and like everything that is money driven just gets tainted with trying to make more money - hence why there are a million and 1 supplements on the market where most of them do fuck all for you, but the 3 I would recommend whole heartedly are:

Omega 3s Fish Oils: This one really depends on whether you eat Oily fish or not, if you consume at least 2 servings per week of oily fish then omega 3 fish oil tablets don't need to be taken, but if you are like me who hates the smell of fish and hates the taste even more, getting your omega 3s in can be quite difficult.

Some benefits of Omega 3s:

  • Can help reduce blood pressure

  • Can help reduce symptoms of DVT

  • Anti inflammatory effects

  • Can potentially help facilitate weight loss

  • Can improve some symptoms of depression

Speak to your GP if you are on any medications for DVT, Blood Pressure or Statins before thinking about taking omega 3s as they may have some interference with your medication.

The daily dosage will be anywhere between 300-1800mg depending on your fish intake.

Vitamin D3: Is actually defined as a pro-hormone, it's a vitamin that is synthesised within the body when the skin is exposed to sunlight, with that being said, nearly 50% of the population in the UK are vitamin d3 deficient, which isn't a surprise for that cold miserable country LOL, but also 25% of the Australian population is also deficient in Vitamin D3.

The benefits of D3:

  • Improves immune system

  • Improves bone health via improving calcium absorption

  • Reduces depressive symptoms

  • Potentially improves strength

  • Potentially improves fat loss

The good thing about vitamin D3 is that you can get your blood levels tested by the GP and then supplement accordingly, and because its a fat soluble vitamin which means it stays in your body for longer and is stored in the liver, so you do not have to take these on a daily basis.

Recommended amounts would be dependant on your blood level results but anywhere between 2000-4000 IU/day... Which can be taken weekly, bi weekly, monthly or whatever as long as the dose matches your daily limit.
