TESTIMONIALS

"James works with you to build an excellent personalised

nutrition plan and continues to support you throughout to achieve your nutrition goals.

You get a real sense that James cares about your goals.

Before beginning any plan James took the time to understand what I wanted to gain out of a plan and what nutritional background I was coming from. Taking

into account my work patterns and current eating habits and applying James’ knowledge and experience produced an initial plan that was tailor made for me.

This meant that there was no daunting changes to begin with and starting was an

absolute breeze, started off positively and continued to build small successes into large ones."

"Working with JL Nutrition has given me the confidence and self-belief to achieve things I would have not thought possible before. I have increased my fitness levels and enjoy doing

activities that I had stopped doing due to weight gain."

"I would say your knowledge of different exercises, the most optimal ways to train and mixing up my pretty boring program was what made me feel that I could benefit from training. Before our training, I thought people only got a personal trainer to motivate them, I did not lack this so I did not think it was worthwhile. However, the new training and eating routines has definitely improved the way I train and I can definitely feel like I am getting stronger each month."

James Long

Hi, my name is James Long..

And helping you improve your health and composition is my mission!

Let me tell you where my journey started; it was not long after leaving college in the UK, so I was around 18yrs old working with a man who was in his late 40s who was fitter, healthier and stronger than me. At 18 years old I should have been feeling like I was in my prime, instead I was 18stone and sluggish.

From that moment on I decided to take myself on a journey to try and get fitter and stronger. As you can imagine, I spent countless hours trawling the internet searching for a magic pill or a quick fix. I was 18 after all..

Heck it didn't come, no matter how many times it was promised, fad diets here, shake diets there, you name it I probably done it. It was the same with my training routine too, GVT training here because its good for muscle building, The 12 week programme written in muscle and fitness because its gonna get me rock hard abs and 18" guns...

This went on for a few years, until I started getting super serious with my training and wanted to progress further into bodybuilding, during these years I almost succumbed to the thoughts of, "being lean isn't for me", "I can't be lean", "its hard for me to diet", you know the thought patterns right?

But I did make it, I managed to get myself a coach, I was coachable, I asked questions and followed the plan religiously, I got so lean, I competed and I become the person I didn't think I would ever be...

But that came at a cost, a cost of my relationship with food. The restrictive nature that bodybuilding preps can induce really messed with how I saw food and how I acted around it, often eating in secret and then binging because "cheat day" right?

But that is where my love for nutrition grew stronger and this is where I decided to take that step into education and study nutrition. I thought there had to be a better way to get through periods like that.

That is where I studied with Mac Nutrition Uni, quiet easily hands down the best gold standard nutrition course out there, I spent an intense 12 months learning the fundamentals of nutrition and biology with a keen interest in health and sports nutrition.

From there, I then also took the plunge to go back into education when I immigrated to Australia and done a PT course, so I can combine 2 of my favourite things together and help create a better industry by helping people like you make the most out of their health.

Today, I stand before you, not as the fat kid but as a passionate, empathetic, confident health coach that is determined to help you achieve the results you are so desperately wanting to achieve.

Peak condition looks different in all sizes, if I can do it, you can too!

Cardio for calories

Cardio for calorie burn! What, why and how?

What the fuck

Training

This question is from my Instagram story quiz and is a common one amongst my clients...

Should I do cardio to burn calories?
A resounding 66% of you said yes, and this is one reason so many people struggle with weight loss, and weight maintenance and have a terrible on-and-off again relationship with exercise.

Did you know only 20% of people who lose weight maintain that weight loss passed the 5-year mark?

Crazy right?

Did you also know that exercise only really makes up 5% of your total daily calorie burn? - More on that down below

If you eat 2 chocolate bars in a day and try to burn them off with cardio you are going to be miserable for about an hour on the treadmill. Even longer for a pizza.
You lose the joy in eating chocolate, feel exhausted trying to lose body fat, and inevitably end up hating exercise.

We all know cardio is known to improve heart health, improve insulin sensitivity (so for the diabetics on this list it can help), help fight against heart disease, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, blood pressure - a healthy heart = a healthier life.

Yada yada yada. I would LOVE to believe this is enough to motivate you to do it consistently but for most people, it isn't. You do need a bigger reason to keep up with your training and cardio if you want to be successful so remember, burning calories will not motivate you for the rest of your life. Nor is it an efficient way to burn calories.

Next time you are worrying about what you ate, thinking you need to exercise it off and trying to burn calories ahead of a big meal, please remember exercise is only 5% of your total daily calorie expenditure.
Pay attention to how this mindset is making you feel, and see if you can shift perspective.

Nutrition

Following from the training section, your body burns calories in 4 different ways.
They are BMR, NEAT, TEF, EE and we are going to dive into each of them so you can have an understanding of how your body works.

BMR: Basal Metabolic Rate

This is basically your base line metabolism, imagine lying in bed all day doing nothing, this is your BMR - its the body using energy to keep you alive. Your BMR really equates to roughly 70% of your calorie expenditure, its a huge amount for just staying alive.

NEAT: Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis

This is everything you do that isn't planned exercise, so every step you take, every time you scratch an itch, a facial expression, gardening, house chores etc it all requires energy to complete the tasks, this equates to roughly 15% of your calorie expenditure. So when you hear people say you need to increase your step count then remember it adds to a fair chunk of calories burned.

TEF: Thermic Effect of Feeding

This is just a fancy way of saying digesting food! Yes every time you consume food you require energy to chew it, digest it and break it down. It's all energy. Protein has the highest net effect, followed by fats and then carbs last - so the more protein you eat the harder your body works to digest it. This equates to roughly 10% of your calorie expenditure.

EE: Exercise Expenditure

So finally we come to energy spent during exercise. For the eagle eyed reader you will have noticed that we have started with the largest number and slowly worked our way down towards 100% ending with the smallest amount. Energy Expenditure roughly only equates to 5% of your daily calorie expenditure, for the effort you put in the gym it's not a great deal.

So apart from your BMR which takes up a huge chunk of your daily calorie expenditure you can see that NEAT plays a much bigger impact than your training expenditure!

So do you need to do cardio to burn calories? No, you should do cardio for the multitude of other health benefits that it has, such as heart health, cardiovascular health, fitness levels.
